Miata NA6
1990
The first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA) debuts in the U.S. market. It features a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine with 116 horsepower and pop-up headlights.
Lightweight with a 2,100-pound curb weight, it draws inspiration from classic British roadsters but with Japanese reliability.
1991
Introduction of the first limited-edition Miata, the “Special Edition” in British Racing Green with tan leather interior, and unique BBS wheels.
1992
Slight updates including revised dampers and the introduction of a Torsen limited-slip differential as an option.
1993
The “LE” edition is introduced, featuring black paint with red leather interior, and 14-inch BBS wheels.
A new 1.8-liter engine becomes available in Japan, though it doesn’t make it to the U.S. yet.
1994-1997
Miata NA8
1994
The U.S. market receives the 1.8-liter engine, now producing 128 horsepower. Added safety features include dual airbags and optional ABS.
1995
The first “M-Edition” Miata is introduced, featuring Merlot Mica paint, tan leather interior, and additional luxury features like power windows and mirrors.
1996
Minor updates are made to improve NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), and the introduction of OBD-II diagnostics.
1997
The last year for the first-generation NA Miata, ending production in late 1997.
Special “M-Edition” in Marina Green with tan leather and all the luxury features.
1998-2005
Miata NB
1998
The second-generation MX-5 Miata (NB) debuts. It has a more refined design, fixed headlights, and retains the 1.8-liter engine, now producing 140 horsepower.
Improved interior with better ergonomics and optional 6-speed manual transmission (in later years).
1999
Special 10th anniversary edition with Sapphire Blue Mica paint, 6-speed manual, Bilstein shocks, and unique interior trim.
2000
Introduction of the sport suspension package, including Bilstein shocks and a front strut brace.
2001
The NB Miata receives a facelift with new front and rear bumpers, headlights, and taillights. Power increased to 142 horsepower with VVT (Variable Valve Timing) on the 1.8-liter engine.
2002
Mazda releases the “Blazing Yellow” and “Titanium Gray” special editions.
2003
Introduction of the lightweight “Club Sport” package with no power windows or A/C, aimed at enthusiasts who prefer pure driving dynamics.
2004
Launch of the Mazdaspeed MX-5, a turbocharged version producing 178 horsepower, featuring upgraded suspension, brakes, and distinctive styling cues.
2005
Final year of the NB generation. Mazda releases the “Mazdaspeed” special edition in a Lava Orange color.
